Activity
- Read the following four scenarios and identify the problems that exist in these schools in making comments in your e-diary.
Identify if you are experiencing a similar problem at your school. How would you handle these situations?
Scenario 1: Thuto Primary School Scenario 2: Monument High School Scenario 3: Merrington High School Scenario 4: Nelson Mandela High School
- After you have had a chance to think through the problem-solving strategies that you would use, participate in an online discussion with your group (using the subject heading "School scenarios") and discuss the strategy you would use to address at least one of the issues described above.
- Make closing comments in your e-diary.
Activity Two: School Scenarios
ReplyDeleteIn the second scenario at Monument High, I would first conduct a survey to gain an insight into the different levels of teacher's skills and knowledge level in ICT. Then professional development sessions would be organized weekly to cater for the various grouping. A community of best practice would also be established for teachers to share ideas of ICT integration and to practice the diverse ICT tools available at the school. Teachers would also be paired together like a buddy system - a knowledgeable teacher with an inexperience teacher. These pairs would collaborate on tasks where ICT is incorporated in the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, teachers would be encouraged to engage in ICT courses whether online or locally to sharpen their skills and increase their knowledge.
Good points
DeleteI especially like the pairing of experienced with inexperienced teachers. Peer tutoring goes a long way since one may view their colleague in a different light than that of a tutor.
DeleteGood points made handling the scenario. I particularly like the idea of having a Community of best practice which is a strategy where teachers collaborate and offer support to each other.
ReplyDeleteIn agreement. I think that when folks take ownership of what they do they really appreciate, learn and retain more. When teachers work together, each contributing it builds confidence and teachers really need to be confident in using ICTs.
ReplyDeleteScenario Two: Thuto Primary School
ReplyDeleteIn the first instance, I would investigate the cause of the poor internet connectivity. If it is on the part of the Internet Service Provider, I would communicate with them in order for it to normalized quickly. If it is on the part of the network settings of the school, then perhaps we could change those settings and monitor the difference. In other words, see if putting the teachers and learners on the same network would improve the connectivity.
On the issue of illegal use of electricity, the utility company would be contacted and the breech would be investigated. Having found the breech, security measures (closed circuit television, security personnel or watch dogs) would be put in place so that the breech does not recur.
Some good ideas suggested Madame Christian. With the help of the ICT Coordinator you should be able to resolve these issues.
ReplyDeleteSCENARIO FOUR - NELSON MANDELA HIGH
ReplyDeleteThe situation that has occurred at Nelson Mandela High is currently being experienced at our institution. The difference is that instead of charging $30 for ICT access, we charge $50 to cover all lab fees per student per academic year.
Sometimes ignorance on the part of the parents should be blamed for non-support of their children.
To combat this situation, one of the methods that I would use is to first collate the subjects that require lab interaction. Teachers should be asked to give budget projection for experiments to be conducted etc. A copy should be attached to the child's list so that parents are made aware of the situation/costing. Another method comes though communication at parent/teacher conferences.
Our problem is compounded because we are a government-run school and parents expect the government to fill and pay for parental obligations to education. They feel that they bear no responsibility in this.
Stringent measures should be taken e.g. giving deadlines for payment. It may seem harsh but the only way education is to progress is if all stake holders hold their responsibilities towards the students and their progress.
Another method can be to encourage and solicit corporate sponsorship to assist in off setting these costs.
These should be teamed so that continuous education through integration becomes a reality.
